Authority Warns Against Political Attacks on ICT Sector Investors

Posted on: 29th September 2017

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has today warned against unwarranted political attacks on investors in the ICT industry as this may potentially cause disaffection and erode gains made in the growth of sector in the country.

The warning follows claims by the National Super Alliance (NASA) party leadership that local mobile telecommunications network operators were involved in the manipulation of the August 8th General Elections.

‘‘We urge political actors to canvass their agenda in a responsible manner in order to avoid putting into jeopardy the impressive investment and other gains that Kenya has made in the local ICT sector,’’ said CA Director General Mr. Francis Wangusi, in a statement.

The Authority says such attacks have the potential to diminish the faith and confidence that Kenyans have in information and communications technologies (ICTSs), a critical driver of socio-economic development.

‘‘ICTs have been successfully deployed and are embraced in all facets of life in the country, including banking, business, education, health, agriculture and government. Elections are no exception. The Authority is confident that ICTs can be deployed successfully to support this important national activity,’’ added Mr.Wangusi.

For the current levels of investment and adoption of ICT to be sustained, the Authority noted, it is imperative for investors to be accorded the necessary support.

Mr.Wangusi has therefore urged politicians to report any alleged election malpractices on the part of industry players to the relevant law enforcement agencies.  He called upon them to refrain from launching blanket condemnations against investors in the ICT sector.

On Tuesday, the NASA accused mobile service provider Safaricom of complicity in the alleged failure of transmission of electoral results.
