CA Director General Appears Before Parliamentary Committees on Proposed Safaricom Share Sale

The Director General of the Communications Authority, Mr David Mugonyi, appeared before a joint sitting of the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning and the Select Committee on Public Debt and Privatisation yesterday evening. The appearance was in relation to the proposed partial divestiture of the Government of Kenya’s shareholding in Safaricom PLC.

The joint session was convened to review the proposed partial sale of the government’s shares in Safaricom PLC, which includes a plan to dispose of at least 15 per cent of the state’s stake to Vodacom. The discussions brought together key government and industry stakeholders to interrogate the rationale, structure, and implications of the proposed transaction.

As part of their oversight mandate, the two committees are conducting hearings and inviting public submissions to inform their scrutiny of the divestiture process. The proposed sale is viewed as a significant step in national wealth management.
